Today was dedicated to getting everything ready for our daughters' "Pumpkin Painting & Cupcake Decorating Party" with their friends. Our daughters have a passion for cooking and began assisting in the kitchen from a young age. I've learned that cooking with little ones (my daughters are 3 and 5) requires patience, additional time, and some effort to clean up afterward. However, it's an invaluable experience that I wouldn't trade for anything.

Today, my 5-year-old made the decision to bake the cupcakes for our upcoming party independently, except for scooping the batter into the pan and putting them in the oven.

A collection of cupcake baking supplies. Funfetti cake mix, oil, water, and eggs on a counter.

She started by tallying cupcake liners before arranging them in the pan. Being extremely meticulous, she aimed to create a pattern, and carefully counted out each color to complete a single row.

Once she had readied the pan, she took the box, verified the list of ingredients, gathered all the necessary items, measured the ingredients, added them to the KitchenAid mixer, and combined everything. She even used Alexa to set a timer, ensuring that she mixed the batter for the right amount of time. Her smile clearly reflects her pride in successfully preparing the cupcakes independently.

After preparing the batter, I transferred it into the pans and assisted her in placing them in and removing them from the oven. She then set her timer on Alexa once more to make sure they were baked for the right duration. When the timer beeped, she assisted me in checking the cupcakes for doneness. Subsequently, we removed them from the pans and placed them on cooling racks.

As a small reward for her concentration and finishing her baking, she was allowed to taste the batter from the mixer paddle. The cupcakes have now cooled down and are all set to be decorated with friends tomorrow evening.

Seeing my child engage in baking brings me joy as a mother. It allows her to enhance her reading and math skills, develop her motor skills, and boost her self-confidence by overcoming a challenging task.

Do you engage in baking activities with your children? If so, what recipe do you enjoy the most?
